We've taken some of your favorite games and gave them an infection control twist
Simple Game Ideas is a collection of short games that serve as a supplement to any program or training session. They are short, simple and require little effort to prepare. These activities will bring fun into the serious world of germs!  This is Part 1 of a 10 Part Series of infection control game ideas.  Hopefully you can find a game that will teach great hygiene to your students or employees!

General Game Summaries

"Germs" or "Filth" (Played like Horse)

Potential Supplies: Basketball hoop or other opening to throw or toss an object through, a basketball or other throwing object, prizes, etc.

GERMS or FILTH is played similar to the ball game HORSE on a basketball court. Each player takes a turn shooting the basketball.  Although this game is usually played with a basketball, you can also use bean bags and a garbage can or other target.

Each player chooses (creates) his/her own shot unless the preceding player makes their shot. If a player misses a shot after the preceding player makes a shot immediately prior, that player is given a letter.

The letters given out to the players that miss shots should be done in order (i.e. G-E-R-M-S or F-I-L-T-H). Once a player receives all of the letters, he/she is “contaminated” and eliminated from the game. The game is played until one player remains. The winner was able to avoid the GERMS or FILTH pandemic! Remember, this game can be modified to use any container or small object and not just basketball equipment.

Use the Glo Germ Kit to emphasize the spreading of germs and other infections.  This makes for a fun and engaging lesson!

Amoeba Tag

Potential Supplies: No supplies necessary.  However, prizes are recommended to increase game interaction.

Amoeba tag is similar to regular tag except that the player(s) tagged join the other “infected” player(s). Thus, the group of Amoeba players grows as each subsequent player is tagged. Once tagged, that player and other tagged players can tag as many uninfected players as they can. The last player to get tagged is the “survivor of the attack of the Amoebas!” and he/she wins! The winning player then becomes the first Amoeba and the game starts over.

Follow up this game a simulation germ lesson (Glo Germ fluorescent powder and black light)

Fun Facts from NIH (www.newsinhealth.nih.gov):

One of the best ways to guard you and your family against infectious disease is to stay up-to-date with your vaccines.
Public health officials agree that the benefits of vaccination far outweigh the risks.
