Glo Germ Health Lesson

Glo Germ Lesson: Infection Control Olympics

Infection Control Olympics

Content Objective:

The students/staff members will learn correct hygiene principles through the popularity of Olympic Games.  The lesson generates some competition to engage students and boost infection control awareness.

Materials:

The “Activities” and “Games” suggestions below, Glo Germ Indentifier Light (black light), Glo Germ Fluorescent Lotion, game equipment, prizes, podium (optional), Olympic pictures or video (optional), Certificates of Achievement

Vocabulary

  • Olympics
  • Germs
  • Infection Control

Building Background Knowledge:

Ask students the following questions:

  • Why is hygiene so important? (makes you feel better, reduces illness, keeps others healthy, better learning environment, etc.)
  • Why is it important to wash your hands? (to keep them clean, to stop the spread of germs)
  • What are the Olympics? (a worldwide competition with competing countries as the teams)

Exploration:

  • Use an Olympic (preferably from recent years) highlight video to display a variety of Olympics games that are played worldwide.
  • Use the Glo Germ Kit System to illustrate how germs spread and affect us daily.
    • Have students apply the Glo Germ Fluorescent Lotion or Powder.  Make sure they get it all over their hands (i.e. doorknobs, sinks, pencils, or other designated area)
    • Using the black light, show students how germs lurk on their hands
    • Have the students wash their hands and check for the germs again
    • Use the Identifier Lotion or Powder for many of the activities and games supplied by OUTFOX.

Explanation:

Introduce the Olympics with a video or series of pictures showing a variety of events.  Explain that countries from all over the world compete in these games.  The Olympics have been a great way for countries to come together and learn about each other.

Use the Glo Germ Kit to introduce the infection control part of the lesson.  Make sure to make a link between fighting infection and the chosen (Olympic) games/activities to show how fighting germs can be fun like a game.  See the game and activity suggestions below.

Develop a scoring system that will increase the competitive nature of the games and activities.  Split the class into groups of 3-4 children.  Keep the teams and individuals up to date on the scores by posting the results after each game.  Have an awards assembly on the podium area to give out medals and prizes.  For an effective program, give each participant a Certificate of Achievement.

“Hands On Experience:”

  • Parasite Relay (Telephone game)
  • Soap and Water Relay (get the supplies to one area the fastest)
  • Cleaning Competition (Which teams cleans the best- verified by the Glo Germ Identifier Lotion or Powder)
  • Germ Shot-put (Who can throw the designated “germ” furthest)
  • Germ Drop (Bean Bag Toss).
  • Antibody Battle (Field/Gym Hockey or Soccer)
  • Flu Toss (Water Balloon Toss)
  • Evasion; Avoid the Germ (Hot Potato)
  • Make Germ Masks or Hats.

Wrap Up:

  • Have an awards ceremony for the team or individuals that were the top three (i.e. Gold, Silver, and Bronze)
  • Hand out prizes to the winners
  • Have a judging contest on the created crafts (Which one was the prettiest?  Scariest?  Best overall?)

Home Connection:

  • Have the students take home the masks or hats created for a reminder of the lesson taught.
  • Have the students take home the prize(s) from the Infection Control Olympic Games to share with family and friends!
  • Instruct the students to take their Certificate of Achievement home and post them on their refrigerator or wall.
