Part 5 of 8- Guess the germ, virus or bacteria!  Test your students' knowledge.

This infection control game is an 8 part series that is contained within OUTFOX Prevention's Hygiene Instructional Manual.  Inside this health manual you will find many other infection control activities and ways to incorporate Glo Germ into your lessons.

Teaching hygiene, hand washing and other health principles can be awkward and difficult.  Glo Germ Kits help make the lessons fun and memorable.  If you have not heard of Glo Germ then please see this blog post:

The Glo Germ system is a simple two-part process.  Spread the simulation germs (fluorescent liquids or powder) and use a UV black light to show how germs spread and how to best sanitize areas to remove bacteria, etc.

Let us know if you have questions.  Good luck g

Who Am I? #5

Use the clues below to guess the germ (answer below).

About Me:

I am an acute generalized disease caused by a virus that is a member of the herpes virus group.

What I do:

You will know you have me because I show up as an itchy, blister-like rash. The rash usually comes in a series of red bumps that quickly turn into blisters, ooze and then crust over. I also bring a mild fever and fatigue. I stay with you for your life hiding in your body’s nerve cells. I sometimes reappear and am known by a different name at that time (Shingles or Zoster).

How to Stop Me:

Even before I show up as blisters, I have been spreading to all those in close contact with the infected person. I spread through direct contact, droplet (secretions) or through airborne particles. The infected person continues to spread me until 5 days after the rash appears. For example, I spread when a person that has not had me yet comes in contact with what is shed off from the blisters I create. Infected persons should wait until the 6th day (after the rash started) to return school or work.

Choose the virus, illness, or bug from the list that best fits the description below.

  • -Meningitis
  • -Tuberculosis
  • -Head Lice
  • -Hepatitis A
  • -Impetigo
  • -Varicella (Chicken Pox)
  • -Influenza
  • -Tinea Capitis (Ringworm of the Scalp)

Answer: Varicella (Chicken Pox)
