Hello, Teachers!

I hope you all had a nice long (and well deserved!) Spring Break! The end of the year is here, and your energy is winding down. Unfortunately, your students are headed in the opposite direction. They are getting spring fever!

Along with that come hay fever, allergies and those late spring colds. Adding a fun hygiene lesson before they are off for summer break will help them stay healthy until next school year!

Especially for allergies, this is a great time to remind students about using tissues for sneezes and washing hands after itching eyes. With all of the sneezing going around, it’s only a matter of time before your room is full of germs.

One of my favorite activities this time of year is the Tissue Poem! Use those penmanship skills and have your students write this poem:

When I have to go kerchoo,
you know what I always do?
My Kleenex covers both mouth and nose,
then into my Kleenex the kerchoo goes!

Recite the poem as a class and talk about why it is important to catch the germs with their sneezes!

Add a self portrait activity with a tissue to finish the project to remind them of good habits with tissues!  The self portrait can be of the student looking healthy or sick.

An 8.5x11 size portrait works great for this activity.  Once they have their portrait completed, attach a kleenex tissue by staple or glue.  Hang the Tissue Portraits for a short time and then let them take the portraits home to hang up.

Goodbye Germs!
